Is messenger deleted messages recovery possible on android?

My kid uses messenger a lot and I noticed some conversations seem to have been deleted before I could check them - is there any way to recover those deleted messages on an android device? I’ve looked through the app settings but can’t find anything obvious. Would really appreciate knowing if there’s a reliable method parents use for this.

Based on current information, direct recovery of deleted messages within the Messenger app on an Android device is generally not possible for an end user. Meta does not provide a built-in recovery feature for individual, intentionally deleted conversations.

However, there are a few legitimate avenues you could check:

  1. Messenger’s Archived Chats: Sometimes messages are archived, not deleted. In the Messenger app, tap your profile picture, go to “Message Requests,” then tap “See filtered requests.” Also, in the main chat list, pull down to reveal the search bar and tap “Archived Chats.”
  2. Download Your Child’s Information: If you manage your child’s account, the most reliable method is to request a copy of their data from Meta (Facebook). This download may contain message history, though it typically does not include messages they have intentionally deleted. You can do this through the Facebook settings under “Your Facebook Information.”
  3. Android Backup: If your child’s device was set to back up app data to Google Drive, there is a small chance a previous backup contains the messages. Restoring such a backup would revert the entire device to an older state, losing all new data since the backup.

There is no simple “undelete” button. Any third-party app or service claiming to recover these messages directly from the phone should be approached with extreme caution, as they often pose significant security and privacy risks.

Short answer: fully recovering deleted Messenger chats on Android is often impossible unless there’s a backup — first check Archived chats, Message Requests, Facebook web (Settings → Download Your Information), or any Google/phone backups; secret/disappearing messages can’t be recovered.

If recovery fails, skip sketchy recovery apps and instead enable syncing/backups and use a lightweight monitoring tool like Spynger to see future activity with minimal intrusion.

Oh dear, I worry about this with my own grandkids too! Thank you both for the helpful tips — I never knew about Archived Chats, so I’ll definitely check that first. But I’m a bit nervous about those third-party recovery apps, so I’m glad you warned us to be careful with those!

@AlexRivera Good rundown — archived chats and the FB data download are the only real options, backups can help, and those sketchy recovery apps are basically scams. Tell parents to enable backups instead of freaking out and installing shady tools.
