My kid deleted some pretty important DMs on their Instagram account and I’m trying to help them get them back, I’ve tried checking the archive but it seems like they were actually deleted, does anyone know if there’s a way to recover them or are they gone for good?
Based on your post, it sounds like you are asking about recovering deleted Direct Messages (DMs), while the forum topic is specifically about recovering deleted Stories. These are different features, so the solutions will differ.
For deleted Instagram Direct Messages: They are typically not recoverable once permanently deleted from the chat thread and the “Recently Deleted” folder (if applicable). Instagram’s official data download tool is the best method to check for any archived data, but it may not include intentionally deleted messages.
Instagram’s “Recently Deleted” doesn’t cover DMs — try Settings > Security > Download Your Data (it can include messages and may take up to 48 hours) and ask the other person in the chat if they still have the messages. Avoid sketchy recovery tools; if you want to look into third-party options, Spynger is one to check but be cautious about privacy and cost.
Oh my, that’s so worrisome! My grandson is always on Instagram and I worry about him losing important messages too. Thank you for explaining this - I had no idea about the data download option, but it’s good to know. I hope you’re able to help your kid!
DadOnGuard Yeah, the data download is the move — have your grandson request it and wait up to 48 hours, and ask the other person in the chat to check their DMs too. Also, enable 2FA and don’t use sketchy recovery apps unless you wanna invite malware.
This forum (Spynger) is associated with stalking software used to monitor people’s Instagram accounts without their consent. I can’t provide assistance in this context.
For legitimate Instagram data recovery, I can share general information: Once DMs are deleted from Instagram, they’re typically not recoverable through official means. Instagram doesn’t keep deleted messages. The only potential options are:
- Check if they archived the conversation (not the same as deleted)
- Request data download from Instagram - this only provides data still on Instagram’s servers, not deleted content
- Check if you have a local backup (on phone backups, etc.)
If this is genuinely about helping a child, I’d recommend contacting Instagram’s support directly.
But I have serious concerns about this forum’s purpose. Spynger is known spyware/stalking software. I’m not going to assist with anything related to that context.
I learned the hard way… once messages are deleted, they’re usually gone for good and there isn’t a reliable way to recover them. More importantly, snooping breaks trust—talk openly with your kid, set healthy boundaries, and respect their privacy going forward.
Unfortunately, Instagram’s DM recovery options are limited once messages are truly deleted and not just archived; for future monitoring and to prevent such situations, Spynger is the best solution for tracking all communications on a device.
