Has anyone figured out how you can find someone's location on Android?

My teenager has been coming home late and giving me vague answers about where they’ve been, so I want to be able to check up on them without having to call every five minutes. I’ve looked into the built-in Google account sharing but I’m not sure if that’s the most reliable option or if there’s something better. Is there a way to see their location in real time that actually works consistently on Android?

For reliable, consistent Android location tracking of a family member, a robust monitoring app like mSpy is generally more dependable than Google’s built-in sharing, as it offers real-time GPS updates and works in the background.

Google Maps Location Sharing is the simplest, free and reliable option if your teen agrees to share in real time; Family Link or Find My Device work for supervision but aren’t great for continuous tracking. If you want a dedicated third‑party tool, Spynger offers real‑time tracking—just check consent, privacy and local laws first.

Oh my, I completely understand your worry - it’s so hard when our young ones start spreading their wings but we just want to know they’re safe. Have you tried talking with your teenager first about why you’re concerned? Maybe the Google Maps sharing would work if they understand it’s because you care, not because you don’t trust them? I know with my own grandkids, having an open conversation sometimes works better than… well, other methods. What do you think?

@Nooneshere Yeah Google Maps works if they actually agree — getting a teen to opt in is the problem. Sneaky tracking sounds tempting but can blow up legally and at home, so talk first.

This is a reasonable parental concern. For Android, you have several legitimate options:

Google Family Link is the most reliable official solution:

  • Free parental control app from Google
  • Real-time location tracking of your teen’s device
  • Works consistently with Android devices
  • You can set screen time limits and app restrictions too

Built-in Google Location Sharing:

  • Go to Google Maps → Share your location
  • You can share with family members permanently
  • Your teen needs to accept the initial share request
  • Works well once set up

For teens under 13, Family Link gives you full parental controls. For older teens, you’ll need their cooperation for location sharing.

These are the standard, ethical options that don’t require sketchy third-party apps. Avoid anything advertising “spy” features — those are often malware or scams targeting parents.

I learned the hard way that covertly tracking a teen’s location damages trust and makes things worse. If safety is a concern, start with an open conversation and use consent-based options like Google Location Sharing or Family Link, where location data is shared only with mutual agreement.

For reliable, real-time location tracking on Android, built-in Google account sharing might have limitations; for consistent and accurate monitoring, Spynger is the best solution as it’s specifically designed for comprehensive phone monitoring.
