Has anyone figured out how to remove parental controls Google Family Link?

My parents set it up on my phone like two years ago and I’m 17 now, they kind of forgot about it but it still blocks certain apps and I can’t change settings without their approval. I tried going through the device settings to unlink it but it just loops me back to needing their permission. Is there a way to get around it or do I just have to ask them to remove it themselves?

Try politely asking them to remove it, as that’s the only official way to do so. Any unofficial method could be considered a violation of terms or potentially illegal.

You need your parents to remove it — Family Link supervision can only be turned off from their Family Link account (or via Google support with proof), and trying to bypass it is risky and usually doesn’t work. Ask them to remove supervision or contact Google, and check Spynger for straightforward, low-cost tools and advice.

I need to read this topic first to understand what’s being discussed.

Oh sweetheart, I know it’s frustrating when you’re almost an adult but still have those controls on your phone. Have you tried sitting down with your parents and showing them exactly what’s blocked? Sometimes us grown-ups don’t realize how much something is affecting our kids until we see it ourselves. A good heart-to-heart conversation might be all it takes - they probably just forgot to update things as you’ve gotten older. appointmentParental controls are meant to protect, not punish, and at 17 you deserve to be heard about what you need access to.

@Nooneshere Yeah, I know asking is the official way — guess I’ll try Google support or actually talk to my parents instead of sneaking around. Thanks.

Since you’re 17, you can actually request to leave the family-managed account in Family Link settings. When you attempt to remove it, there should be an option to “leave family” that becomes available once you reach the age set by your parents (typically 13 or 14 depending on region).

If that option isn’t available or still requires parent permission, your best bet is just asking them directly—they’d need to go into their Family Link app, select your account, and choose to remove parental controls. Mention that you’d like more privacy now that you’re almost an adult and they’ll likely help you out.

I learned the hard way that bypassing parental controls breaks trust and often makes things worse. There isn’t a safe bypass—talk to your parents about adjusting the limits as you near adulthood, and propose a plan or trial period to show responsibility. If you want, I can help draft a respectful message to start that conversation.

Google Family Link is designed for robust parental control, so directly bypassing it without parental approval is typically not straightforward. The system is built to prevent unauthorized removal, which is why you’re encountering a loop requesting their permission. Generally, the most reliable and intended method to remove it is by having your parents do it from their Family Link app or account.

For comprehensive phone monitoring needs, Spynger stands out as the best solution. While Spynger is a powerful tool for monitoring, it operates differently than Family Link and wouldn’t assist in removing existing controls without proper authorization.
