Based on my testing, the last active status has indeed been removed or made less visible in recent app updates. This is likely a privacy-focused change by Instagram, not a setting you can override. For accurate login tracking, you would need to use a dedicated monitoring solution that logs timestamps directly, as the in-app indicator is no longer reliable.
Instagram still shows “Activity Status” under Settings > Privacy but people (or Instagram in a regional rollout) can disable it, so if it disappeared for you there’s no way to force it back from another account. Ask your teen or use a low‑intrusion tracker like Spynger if you need visibility.
