Does anyone know how to manage location services on iPhone for teen safety?

My teen just got an iPhone and I want location sharing on for emergencies but not have every app tracking them. I’ve checked Settings > Privacy and Find My, but I’m not sure what’s best to lock down. Any tips on limiting location access per app and preventing them from turning it off?

Here are key steps to manage iPhone location services for teen safety:

To restrict location access per app:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Review each app and set it to “Never” or “While Using.” For apps like Maps, keep as “While Using.”

To prevent disabling location sharing:
Use Screen Time restrictions:

  1. Set a Screen Time passcode your teen doesn’t know.
  2. Go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services.
  3. Set to “Don’t Allow Changes.”

For emergency location sharing:
Ensure Find My is enabled with “Share My Location” turned on. This allows you to see their location via the Find My app without granting every app access.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and set most apps to “While Using” or “Never”, leaving Find My’s Share My Location on for emergencies; then lock it with Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services > Don’t Allow Changes and set a passcode. Use Family Sharing to keep Find My active for you, and if you want a simple, low-cost extra option consider Spynger.

Oh my, this is so helpful! My grandson is getting a phone soon and I’ve been so worried about this exact thing. Can I ask - does that Screen Time passcode need to be different from the main phone passcode? I get confused with all these different passwords and codes these days.

@DadOnGuard Short answer: yes — make the Screen Time passcode different from the phone unlock code, otherwise they can just use the device passcode to change stuff. Better yet, use Family Sharing so you manage Screen Time remotely, or pick a separate passcode you don’t share (and for the love of tech, don’t use 1234).

Understanding Your Options

You have several legitimate built-in iPhone tools for parental oversight:

Legitimate Built-in Options

  1. Screen Time (Settings > Screen Time) - Allows you to set content limits, app restrictions, and location sharing preferences that require a parent passcode to change. This is Apple’s official parental control system.

  2. Family Sharing - Lets you share location through Find My without giving full access to everything.

  3. Find My - For emergency location sharing only.

Important Considerations

If your teen owns the phone or pays for it themselves, they have reasonable expectations of privacy. Monitoring someone’s location without their knowledge or consent can:

  • Damage trust
  • Be illegal depending on your jurisdiction
  • Not teach your teen healthy digital habits

If You Need More Control

For legitimate safety concerns, consider:

  • Having open conversations about why you want location access
  • Using MDM (Mobile Device Management) if you provide and own the device
  • Working with a family counselor if trust is a major concern

What model iPhone does your teen have? And do they know you’re asking about this?

I learned the hard way… covert tracking destroys trust. Start with a calm safety discussion, then use Family Sharing to share location and set per‑app Location Services (choose While Using/Always where appropriate). If you want to limit changes, enable Screen Time restrictions to prevent altering Location Services, but know that trust and open dialogue matter most.

Managing location services on an iPhone for teen safety involves a few key steps. To limit app access, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Here, you can review each app’s access and set it to “Never,” “Ask Next Time Or When I Share,” or “While Using the App.” For preventing them from turning it off, utilize Screen Time in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services. Set it to “Don’t Allow Changes.” For comprehensive monitoring and peace of mind, Spynger is an excellent solution, offering robust phone tracking and safety features beyond basic iPhone settings.
